Ready. Set. Write! Week 8

Ready. Set. Write! is a weekly blog check in so writers can cheer each other on and support each other. Check out one of the lovely host bloggers (Erin FunkJaime MorrowKaty UppermanAlison Miller, and Elodie Nowodazkij) for more details and to join in. It's never too late to start!

How I did on last week's goal: I wanted to hit 3,500 and I managed 3,000. Not all the way there, but I am happy with that number.

My goal for this week: I am going for 3,500 again. Victory shall be mine!

A favorite line from my story OR a word or word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised: Alas, most of it was total crap. I just couldn't seem to figure out where I wanted to go. Why is there no GPS machine (with a cool English accent) for novel writing?

GPS: Where do you want to go?
Me: I'd like to pass quickly through their past relationship and then head into the present conflict.
GPS: Try 500 words of witty dialog about an evil childhood cat and then make him kiss her best friend in the bathroom.

The biggest challenge I faced this week: Do you remember the cloud dough incident from last week? Well, letting them play with the rest of the cloud dough OUTSIDE was also a mistake.

We are going to have to power wash the deck.

You never see that shit on Pinterest.

In non-craft related challenges...

I keep rewriting the first few chapters even though I KNOW it is ridiculous because I can always go back and change them later. I do this every single time. It's like I need them to be perfect before I can move on. So I'm trying to just write and not edit as I go. Results are mixed so far but I am hopeful!

Something I love about my WIP: The first few chapters are really tight ;)

How was your week?

  1. Yay for those tight first chapters! And 3000 words is AWESOME. Good for you! And I need one of those GPS things for writing too. There are too many different directions I could take to get to my destination and I need the shortest and most effective one!

Hope you have a great week!

  2. Lol! Nothing better than multi-written first chapters (I do it every time too). A GPS for writing would be awesome! That's one reason my WiP is stalling around - can't decide which direction to go. Yay to getting so many words done this week!

  3. A GPS machine would come in handy! :P Haha.

Hopefully the inner editor will stay away this week! :)

  4. Pinterest is such a lie. Good luck with the deck, hopefully it won't hinder the writing!

  5. "You never see that shit on Pinterest." LOL. Very true. Maybe cloud dough overall is just a mistake? And I think WIP GPS should totally be a thing. My husband's GPS says, "You are on the shortest route and your route is clear." I'd love to know that about my WIP, it'd be so comforting! Good luck on making it to 3,500 this week! :)

  6. Woo hoo for really tight first chapters :) We have the same issue--re-working chapters over and over even though we know we can always go back and re-write. Also, power washing sucks. Good luck with your goals this week.

  7. Those dreaded first chapters. Yep, I do that too. I think it's because there's just so much emphasis placed on those first pages when querying. We just want to make them shine. So, you're not alone. Awesome job on those 3000 words! Have a great week, Carrie!

  9. "We are going to have to power wash the deck.

You never see that shit on Pinterest." This cracked me up. So true. Sometimes I feel like a crappy parent for not doing enough Pinterest activities with my kids, but now I remember why I don't. I don't need to clean MORE. You're a good mama.

  10. I have a love hate relationship with pinterest because it makes certain things look easy when they're a pain in the behind, but then you stumble on something that actually works out and you think pinterest is amazing again. You did amazing with writing 3k! That's awesome!

  11. I'm laughing so hard right now. Love the GPS dialogue, and yes, that would be so handy. I feel bad laughing about the cloud dough debacle when really I should be sympathetic, but I can just picture it. Ick. Way to go Pinterest.

I'm the exact same way when it comes to perfecting those first few scenes before moving on. I always feel like the rest of the story will be better if it has a good foundation to begin with. Good luck with your next 3500 words and all that power washing!
