Ready. Set. Write! Week 7

Ready. Set. Write! is a weekly blog check in so writers can cheer each other on and support each other. Check out one of the lovely host bloggers (Erin FunkJaime MorrowKaty UppermanAlison Miller, and Elodie Nowodazkij) for more details and to join in!

How I did on last week's goal: I wanted to hit 3,000 words and I got nearly 4,000. Woohoo!

My goal for this week: I'm going for 3,500 this week. Go big or go home, right?

A favorite line from my story OR a word or word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised:

"The minute I got to the party I knew it was a mistake. I should’ve been home, huddled under the covers while mainlining ice cream and regretting my foolish choices. That is the appropriate response after punching the big red self-destruct button on your own life."

The biggest challenge I faced this week: My own idiocy. I tried to be a crafty mom and made cloud dough (flour mixed with oil to make it moldable) for my toddlers. Great idea, right? Um, yes, but it is WINTER here so they played with it inside, and I maaaay have slightly overestimated their ability to stay at the table.

There are now shining white handprints all over my house. It looks like Max Evans has been healing everything: curtains, furniture, pets...

(Sadly, this still worked out better than my last crafty mom moment when the toddlers fed a whole batch of peanut butter play dough to the dog and he spent the rest of the day puking up the stickiest and most disgusting substance the world has ever seen.)

Something I love about my WIP: I can't stop thinking about it.

How was your week?

  1. Haha wow that sounds like one mess!
The WIP sounds to be going along nicely. Neat scene, I wonder just how bad the button was that was hit?
Good luck keeping it up this week!

  2. Congratulations on smashing your goal! :D And I love that excerpt! Poor character, but it really does make me want to find out more about what happened to them!

LOL, it sounds like your little ones had fun, at any rate! Bit less so for you... (Oh Roswell, I'd totally forgotten all about that show!) And good luck with this week, hopefully you'll get to spend plenty of time writing and not scrubbing shiny handprints off things...!

  3. Oh no! Your crafty mom story sounds like something right out of a sitcom! I hope the dog and your house are doing much better now. Awesome job on the writing--I'm rooting on you to hit that 3.5K

  4. I can't stop laughing at the Roswell comparison. So sorry you have to deal with that, but the kids had fun and that's the important thing.

Your excerpt is fantastic; there is so much voice in it! And it definitely has me wanting to know more about your WIP. Good luck this week!

  6. Way to hit your word goals and then some! Also, I give you mad props for doing a messy, craft project indoors. I cringe when my kids ask to use playdoh.

  8. Bahaha! Totally laughing about the Roswell comment. Too funny! I love the excerpt you shared, Carrie. It raises so many questions, like what exactly did she do to mess things up? Awesome job blowing your word count goal out of the water too. Lots of luck this week! :D

  9. OMG I'm laughing so hard about that Roswell comparison! Love that show, and I actually just got my son into it this summer. Fortunately he's old enough not to leave shiny hand prints all over the house now, though.

Great excerpt too btw! Good luck getting 3500 words down AND cleaning off all those hand prints! ;)

  10. UGH! Just last week I decided to let my toddler play with play dough on the living room table, and I had tiny rainbow bits all mashed into my carpet. Not as bad as your story, though! Obviously kids rarely keep things at the table, especially when it's something you REALLY need them to keep at the table, lol.

Good luck on your word goal and on any future Pinterest Mom projects ;)

  11. I loved your crafty mom and toddler debacle almost as much as I loved your excerpt--beautifully written! I've been meaning to try cloud dough, but you make an excellent point about it then getting everywhere...

  12. Another perspective on those shiny handprints....my toddlers grew up, and are now 11 and almost 14. There may be some paint handprints on a window and a wall that I'm glad I never eradicated, because, if I had, those perfect tiny prints would be gone now...

I'm still chuckling about mainlining ice cream. That does sound better than a party when you really need to hide....

    Great progress this week! =D
