Ready. Set. WRITE!

I am really excited to be starting Ready. Set. Write! this week. It's a summer (winter for me) writing intensive for writing/planning/revising and is hosted by Erin Funk, Jaime Morrow, Katy Upperman, Alison Miller, and Elodie Nowodazkij. Everyone sets some goals and then updates with a brief post on Mondays so we can cheer each other on and hold each other accountable.

Fun, right? Check out one of the host blogs for cool buttons and further instructions!

How I did on last week's goal: My goal was to write 500 words a day for five days last week and I did it, which is excellent because I really just need to get back in the habit of making myself sit down and get the words out.

My goal for this week: I just want to keep rolling with the 500 words/five days formula for now.

A favorite line from my story OR a word or word/phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised: If this WIP was a student its report card would say this: X lacks focus but has potential.

The biggest challenge I faced this week: The same challenge I face every night, Pinky - TRYING TO STAY OFF THE INTERNET.

Something I love about my WIP: I've written MG in the past but I'm playing around with something aimed at an older crowd, so it's fun to let my characters swear. I have toddlers and can't swear in real life anymore so I'm meeting my profanity needs on the page :)

How was your week?

  1. Ha! I was so conscientious about not swearing around my kids when they were little and I succeeded most days. Now, I have a teenager and an eleven year old and sadly, the filter isn't always there. :/ But yes, stories are a great outlet for that sometimes! Even if the curse words don't always stay. :) And I love that you found a goal that is working for you! Hope you have another great week!

  4. I’m impressed that you’ve figured out how to stop cursing in front of your toddlers. I am working on that, but my son has said some words I am not proud of, lol. And I am right with you, the internet is the devil. Good luck on your goals this week! :)

  5. Good job on the 500 words five times this past week! Circling social media is one of biggest problems, especially when it comes to writing. I spend WAY too much time on there. Hope this is another productive week! :-)

  6. *passes all the chocolate* I have a little one too and it does make the writing life hard. 500 words is always my daily goal as well.

  7. Keep rolling with what's working, especially when trying to establish a new routine. Routines take a lot of time to create, it turns out, or so I read, but at least you/we have all summer. Great job on sitting down & getting words five days this week, and here's to doing it again!

I've never tried these, but others swear by those internet-blocking apps to force them to focus. I just use Written? Kitten. to both embrace the internet AND get words down; but definitely copy-paste that into your actual document pretty frequently to keep it backed up. (It helped me with my thesis, though, on rough days.)

  8. My kids just got into Pinky and the Brain, so that reference is very timely! Great job on writing 500 words a day!

  9. Excellent work with meeting your goal last week! It's awesome when you just sit down and get the words out--it's better to have something that you can work with later than nothing at all. You're our hero :)

  10. Ha! Staying off the internet is a challenge for me too, but it sounds like you rocked your goals regardless. I've got a 500 word (ish) per day goal as well, and I'm finding it nice and manageable.Best of luck with your goals in the coming week!

  14. Brilliant Pinky and the Brain reference! There aren't enough people who understand that quote... Congratulations on meeting your goal! And good luck with staying off the internet... that's definitely the hardest goal you've got there. ;) Good luck for this week!

  15. Congrats on meeting your goal! And it's so true about writing being a swearing outlet. One of my New Year's resolutions was to not swear as much as I do and writing helps me get it out of my system haha. Good luck with this week's goals!

  16. So glad you met your goal. I like this 500 words a day thing. It's only a page which seems doable. I'll have to try this out. (Just not this week.)

  17. So very Pinky and the Brain: Same thing we do every night... Been there, do that too. May you have better luck changing the habit than I've had.

Congrats though, Carrie on the consistent 500 words a day It's good to just build a habit.
